What is the Boiler Efficiency Directive?

The Boiler Efficiency Directive (92/42/EEC) talks about the efficiency need for new warm-water boilers. Seeing into bettering energy efficiency and reducing the release of carbon dioxide from standard. Lower temperature and gas condensing boilers (4 – 400 kW output).

Apart from energy efficiency. The sound power levels and nitrogen oxides emissions are singled out as important environmental aspects for certain heaters.

The Directive is part of the European Union’s SAVE program (Specific Actions for Vigorous Energy Efficiency). Specifies minimum levels of efficiency that new hot water boilers sold in the UK have to operate at while operating at full load or part load conditions.

Homes in Europe buying a new boiler could face confusing energy labels until as late as 2030. After rightwing MEPs voted to slow down an introduction of the new rules in the European parliament on Wednesday.

Boiler manufacturers will be responsible for ensuring their products have compliant energy labelling. The installer, will be responsible for providing the energy labelling for a complete heating system. While you will need to calculate a system efficiency figure. Also, based on the different components of the system, such as combi boiler, controls, renewables etc. This will then have to combine with the energy efficiency label to complete the installation.

This legislation will affect all the boiler manufactures, especially the large German, British  and Dutch manufacturers, such as Ideal, Vaillant and Worcester Boilers.
